Why Are The Cowboys In The Nfc East

Okay, let’s talk. The Dallas Cowboys. America’s Team. Supposedly. But why, oh why, are they perpetually stuck in the NFC East?
I mean, think about it. Does Texas scream “East Coast” to anyone? Anyone at all?
Geography? Nah.
We all learned about the compass rose in elementary school, right? North, South, East, West. Dallas is pretty firmly planted in the SOUTH. Last time I checked, Texas was closer to Mexico than it was to, say, Philadelphia.
Must Read
So, geography clearly isn't the reason. We can probably throw that map right out the window. Did someone accidentally spill their coffee on the team alignment chart back in the day?
Perhaps it's a cruel joke. A cosmic prank played on all loyal football fans. I envision a group of NFL executives, huddled around a table, cackling maniacally, as they decide to forever bind the Cowboys to a division where they just...don't...belong.

Historical Reasons? Maybe...But!
“But it’s about tradition!” some will cry. “They've always been in the NFC East!” Sure, sure. And we used to think the Earth was flat. Times change. Traditions can be, gasp, UPDATED.
Holding onto tradition for tradition’s sake? Sounds like something my grandma would do with her collection of porcelain dolls. No offense to grandmas and their dolls, of course.
The league expands, things shift. We've seen teams move cities, change names, even try (and mostly fail) to rebrand themselves. Surely, a simple divisional realignment wouldn't be the end of the world. Would it?

Unpopular Opinion Incoming...
Here's my truly unpopular opinion: I think the NFC East secretly loves having the Cowboys. Why? Because even when the Cowboys are mediocre, they bring the drama. They bring the ratings. They give the other teams someone to hate (and beat, hopefully).
It's like that one annoying relative you have to invite to every holiday dinner. They might be a pain, but the family gatherings would be a little less...spicy without them.

Think about the rivalry games. Cowboys vs. Eagles. Cowboys vs. Giants. Cowboys vs. Washington (insert new, less offensive name here). These games are practically guaranteed to be filled with trash talk, questionable calls, and enough drama to fuel a reality TV show for years.
So Where Should They Go?
Alright, so if they don't belong in the East, where do they go? The NFC South? The NFC West? Honestly, I’m not entirely sure. Maybe they should just form their own division: The "America's Team (and Friends)" division. They could invite, I don't know, the Houston Texans? The Jacksonville Jaguars?
Okay, maybe that's a terrible idea. But anything is better than pretending Dallas is part of the East Coast elite.

Ultimately, the Cowboys being in the NFC East is one of those great, unsolved mysteries of the universe. Like why socks disappear in the dryer, or why cats are obsessed with cardboard boxes. We may never truly know the answer.
But hey, at least it gives us something to argue about every Sunday. And that, my friends, is what football is all about. Right?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go watch a rerun of the 1990s Cowboys and try to remember a time when things made a little more sense.
