My Unpopular Opinion: He Was Already Hokage (in Spirit) Way Before!

Hear me out. This is where I might lose some of you. But Naruto didn't need the hat to be Hokage.

Think about it. When did he truly start leading? When did people start looking to him for guidance and strength?

I'd argue it was much earlier.

Exhibit A: Pain's Assault on the Leaf

Remember that fight? The destruction? The despair?

Even before he masters Sage Mode, he steps up. He saves the village.

He doesn't just win a fight. He inspires hope. Doesn't that sound like a Hokage?

Exhibit B: The Fourth Shinobi World War: The Boy Who Carried a Nation

Naruto unites the Shinobi Alliance. Teenagers everywhere looked up to him. They fought for him.

He gives that epic speech that rallies everyone. He is essentially leading the entire damn army.

If that's not Hokage material, I don't know what is!

He Didn't Need the Desk Job

The actual Hokage job? Dealing with paperwork? Attending boring meetings?

That's not Naruto's strength. He is the heart of the village. The symbol. Not necessarily a bureaucrat.

My point is, Naruto embodied the ideals of the Hokage long before he sat behind that desk. He protected the innocent.
