Tracey Ullman You Broke My Heart In 17 Places

Okay, so, Tracey Ullman. We need to talk. Seriously. I mean, you probably don't need to talk to me, but I need to talk about you. Because, honestly? Tracey Ullman, you broke my heart. In, like, seventeen places. Give or take a few.
Okay, maybe not broke my heart in a literal, sob-into-my-pillow way. But you definitely stole a piece, chewed it up, and spat it out in a really, REALLY funny way. That’s almost worse, right?
The Sketch Comedy Queen
Let's rewind a bit. The Tracey Ullman Show. Remember that? It was pure gold. Solid, unadulterated, late-80s/early-90s sketch comedy gold. And she was the alchemist, turning everyday awkwardness into comedic masterpieces.
Must Read
Remember Fern? The perpetually put-upon airline worker? Or maybe the older ladies just trying to navigate the modern world? God, they were hilarious! Ullman didn't just play these characters; she became them. The accents! The mannerisms! The sheer, unadulterated commitment! It was insane. In the best way possible, obviously.
And it wasn't just the characters, it was the writing, too. Sharp, witty, and often surprisingly poignant. You'd be laughing one minute and then… wait, did I just feel a twinge of sympathy for a woman trying to return a slightly-too-ripe melon? Yes. Yes, I did. Thanks, Tracey.

Oh, and let's not forget the musical numbers! Remember those? They were bonkers! Completely, utterly bonkers. And yet, they were also strangely… catchy? I still find myself humming snippets of "They Don't Know" sometimes. Decades later. Is that normal? Probably not. Do I care? Nope.
So, Where's the Heartbreak?
Okay, okay, back to the heartbreak. What I mean by "broke my heart" is more like... she set an impossibly high bar. Like, so high that it’s in freakin’ orbit around Jupiter. Every time I see a sketch comedy show that's even remotely mediocre, I think, "Tracey Ullman would never. She just wouldn't."

And then there's the fact that she's so insanely talented, it's almost unfair. She can sing, she can dance, she can act, she can do accents that would make a linguist weep with joy… what can't she do? Fly? Probably. I wouldn’t put it past her.
And think about the shows that sprung from The Tracey Ullman Show! The Simpsons, for crying out loud! We owe her The Simpsons! Can you even imagine a world without The Simpsons? I shudder to think. So, yeah, she gave us one of the greatest animated shows of all time, but at the same time, she set an impossibly high bar for all animation. Double-edged sword, much?

The Legacy of Funny
But, look, all joking aside (and there's been a lot of joking), Tracey Ullman is a legend. A bona fide, undisputed legend. She paved the way for so many female comedians. She showed us that women could be just as silly, just as outrageous, and just as brilliant as their male counterparts. And, let's be honest, she often outshone them.
So, Tracey, if you're reading this (and let's face it, the chances of that are approximately zero), thank you. Thank you for the laughs, thank you for the inspiration, and thank you for breaking my heart in seventeen (ish) places. It was totally worth it.

And if you haven’t watched The Tracey Ullman Show? What are you waiting for? Seriously! Go! Now! You won't regret it. Unless you're allergic to overwhelming talent. Then maybe proceed with caution.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go watch some old sketches and try not to feel inadequate. It's a losing battle, but hey, at least I'll be laughing.
And maybe, just maybe, I'll finally learn how to pronounce "cauliflower" with a proper British accent. Thanks, Tracey. You're the best (and the worst).
