Starting Gold By Class 5e

Starting Gold By Class 5e

Okay, so picture this: little Timmy, bless his heart, is playing his first ever D&D game. He’s a level 1 rogue, naturally. And during the first session, somehow manages to convince a noble to give him… all of his spare change. We're talking like, enough coppers and silvers to make a small dent in the national debt of Waterdeep. Timmy’s eyes practically popped out of his head. He looked at me, the DM, like he’d just won the lottery. And I thought, "Wow, this kid is way ahead of where I thought he'd be financially."

This got me thinking, and probably you too, about a question every adventurer faces: how much gold is enough gold to start with by the time you hit Class 5e?

Gold at Level 5: The Sweet Spot?

Level 5. That’s when things start getting serious, right? You’re facing tougher monsters, acquiring magical items (hopefully!), and maybe even thinking about buying a small keep or funding some grand scheme. So, how much gold should you realistically have accumulated by this point? I'm not saying you need it, but it helps!

There's no set-in-stone, officially-sanctioned, Wizards-of-the-Coast-approved number. But let's break it down. Your standard adventuring gear is probably covered by level 3, right? We aren't buying torches every session, hopefully. So levels 4 and 5 are a good time to amass gold.

Factors to Consider: A Gold Dragon's Hoard of Variables

Before we throw out a number, let's talk about the factors that can dramatically alter your gold situation. Seriously, one lucky magic item find can skew everything!

  • The DM's Generosity: Some DMs are notorious for being stingy. You'll be lucky to find enough gold to pay for your next night at the inn. Others shower you in riches. (If you have the latter DM, please share their secrets in the comments!)
  • Adventure Modules: Some modules are just inherently more lucrative than others. A dungeon filled with goblins probably won't yield as much loot as a dragon's lair (duh!).
  • Your Choices: Are you the type of character who always tries to negotiate a better price? Or do you just grab the loot and run? Your play style definitely impacts your bottom line.
  • Magic Items: A single bag of holding can save you a fortune in carrying costs, and a potion of healing can prevent costly visits to the temple. Early magic item finds will obviously free up gold!

So, What's the Magic Number?

Okay, enough preamble. Here's my (totally subjective, highly debatable) take: By level 5, a reasonably well-off character should have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 to 3,000 gold pieces. Now, hear me out!

This allows you to:

  • Purchase some basic magical items (if available). A +1 weapon isn't exactly cheap.
  • Afford better armor. AC is king, baby!
  • Fund some downtime activities. Maybe you want to learn a new skill, or brew some potions.
  • Build a safety net. Because things are about to get real dicey.

Why the range? Because, as we discussed, your mileage may vary! A party focused on intrigue and social encounters might have less gold than a party that's constantly clearing dungeons. And a party that doesn't need healing will save a TON of gold. (I'm looking at you, Paladins!)

Don't Obsess Over It!

Ultimately, D&D is about telling a story, and not about min-maxing your gold reserves. But having a decent amount of coin on hand can open up new possibilities and make your character feel more established in the world. So, keep an eye on your finances, but don't let the pursuit of gold overshadow the fun of the game.

What do you think? How much gold should a level 5 character have? Let me know in the comments!
