Speed O Sound Sonic Monster

Speed O Sound Sonic Monster

Okay, so picture this: I'm scrolling through Reddit, procrastinating (as you do), and I stumble upon this thread titled "Who's the most unfairly treated character in One-Punch Man?" Predictably, a war erupts. People are championing Mumen Rider, King (for obvious reasons), and then…bam! Someone drops "Speed-o'-Sound Sonic."

My initial reaction? "Seriously? That guy? The one obsessed with Saitama?" I mean, Sonic's whole deal seems to be getting repeatedly humiliated in increasingly comical ways. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized... they might have a point. Let’s unpack this, shall we? (And by "we," I mostly mean me rambling, but feel free to chime in mentally!)

The Butt of the Joke (Literally)

Sonic is, without a doubt, a comedic foil. He's introduced as a super-fast ninja, all edgy and confident. He's got cool weapons, a cool name (Speed-o'-Sound Sonic – a bit on the nose, maybe? Just a thought). He's basically everything a shonen protagonist thinks they should be before they actually become one. And then… Saitama casually deflects all his attacks with minimal effort. We're talking zero effort. The guy's literally shopping for groceries while Sonic's trying to kill him!

And it gets worse. He’s constantly underestimating Saitama. He comes back with new weapons, new techniques, only to fail more spectacularly each time. Remember the "Sonic Boom" incident? Yeah, let's just say he made a very loud statement... with his backside. Ouch.

But here's the thing: that repeated humiliation is almost… cruel. We're laughing at him, not with him. And while humor is subjective, I think there's a legitimate argument that the joke is starting to wear thin. Don't you think?

The Potential Wasted

Let's not forget, Sonic is seriously powerful. He's got superhuman speed and agility. He's a skilled assassin. He's definitely a force to be reckoned with... if he weren't constantly comparing himself to the literal strongest being in the universe. Imagine if he focused his energy on, I don't know, fighting actual villains? Maybe joining the Hero Association? (Okay, maybe not the Association. He's a bit too… chaotic for them.)

But the potential is there! He could be a legitimate threat! Think about it: He could be clearing out monster threats while the big guns are busy with the larger threats. Instead, he's obsessing over a bald guy who buys groceries. Seriously, Sonic, get some perspective!

The Saitama Effect

I think a large part of Sonic's "unfair" treatment stems from the Saitama Effect. Saitama's power is so absurd that everyone he faces looks weak by comparison. But Sonic is a victim of this more than most. Other characters, like Genos, at least get some wins occasionally. Sonic? Not so much. He's basically a punching bag (sometimes literally) for Saitama's boredom.

And that's where the "unfair" argument starts to resonate. It's not that Sonic is inherently weak; it's that he's constantly being measured against an impossible standard. He's striving for something unattainable, and the narrative is constantly reminding him (and us) of that fact. It's a bit like watching a talented athlete always come in second place to an absolute god in their sport. You start to feel bad for the guy, even if he is a bit of a goofball.

So, is Sonic unfairly treated?

Maybe. Maybe not. It’s a cartoon, after all. But I think there’s enough evidence to suggest that the character's potential is being squandered for the sake of a recurring gag. And while that gag was funny at first, it's starting to feel a little repetitive. Maybe it's time for Sonic to move on, find a new rival, or just, you know, get a therapist.

What do you think? Am I reading too much into this? Or is Speed-o'-Sound Sonic due for a character arc that doesn't involve him getting repeatedly owned by a bored superhero?
