She May Be The Beauty And The Beast Lyrics

She May Be The Beauty And The Beast Lyrics

She May Be The Beauty And The Beast Lyrics: Are We Sure About This?

Okay, let's be honest. We all know the song. The one from Beauty and the Beast. The one that tugs at your heartstrings. The one that describes Belle and her…complicated relationship with the Beast. But have you really listened to the lyrics?

I'm talking about "Something There." You know, the tune where Mrs. Potts and Chip are all giddy about love blossoming in a castle. And it starts with: "There's something sweet and almost kind…" All lovely, right?

Then BAM! The next line hits you: "But he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined." Ouch! Talk about a backhanded compliment! Is this supposed to be romantic? Is this what we're striving for? My dating app profile would be thrilled to get that.

And then there's the classic: "Now he's learning tact and grace." So, before, he was…untactful? Ungraceful? Probably belching at the dinner table, demanding more porridge. Charming!

Let's dissect: "She may be the beauty and the beast." Wait a minute. May be? Is this a question? Are they not entirely convinced? Are we throwing shade on Belle's character too? Maybe she's secretly enjoyed the grumpy, furniture-throwing phase of the Beast. Who are we to judge?

Seriously though, it makes you wonder. They're observing, speculating. They aren't 100% sure. Is the love real? Is it Stockholm Syndrome with singing teacups? Are they just bored and looking for gossip material?

Consider this gem: "There's something there that wasn't there before." Well, duh! He was a monster, then he started trying to be a somewhat-less-monstrous version of himself. Obviously, something changed. That's kind of the point of the whole movie!

The lyrics continue with the Beast being "more polite." The bar is incredibly low, people. Being more polite than a raging, furniture-smashing creature isn't exactly winning any chivalry awards.

And my personal favorite: "She glanced this way, I think she smiled." I THINK she smiled? This is the pivotal moment! This is supposed to be the evidence of blooming romance! And the all-knowing narrators are unsure if she even cracked a smile. Maybe she was just being polite. Maybe she had gas. The possibilities are endless!

Perhaps I'm being overly critical. Maybe I'm missing the point. Maybe it's just a cute, catchy song about finding love in unexpected places. But the lyrics… they're a little bit shady, aren't they?

I mean, it's one thing to say, "Opposites attract!" It's another to say, "He was awful, but now he's slightly less awful, and she might like him."

So, next time you hear "Something There," really listen. Think about what's being said. And ask yourself: is this the fairy tale romance we all aspire to? Or is it just a catchy tune about a girl who maybe, possibly, smiled at a grumpy guy who used to be a monster? I'm leaning towards the latter.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore Beauty and the Beast! It’s a classic. But maybe, just maybe, the lyrics need a little bit of…re-evaluation. Perhaps a rewrite that's a little less…ambiguous.

After all, shouldn't a love song be a bit more certain? A bit less "She may be the beauty and the beast?" Just a thought.

Ultimately, the true beauty might lie in the listener.

"Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, beauty and the beast."
Maybe that is all that matters.
