Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Prayer Printable

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Prayer Printable

Okay, let's be real. Remember that "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" prayer? The one almost every kid learns? Yeah, that one.

I'm just going to say it. I have some thoughts. Possibly unpopular thoughts. Prepare yourselves.

Nighty Night, Sleep Tight...and Maybe Die?

Seriously, what's up with the "If I should die before I wake" line? Talk about a bedtime buzzkill. Who thought that was a good idea for little kids?!

Imagine snuggling into your blankie. Then BAM! Existential dread. Thanks, prayer!

It's like, "Good night, sweet dreams! Oh, and you might not wake up. Just FYI." My inner child is permanently scarred. Possibly.

The Guilt Trip Starts Early

Don't get me wrong, the sentiment is sweet. Asking for divine protection is a lovely thought.

But that whole "I pray the Lord my soul to take" bit? It feels a tad…heavy. Even now.

It subtly implies, doesn't it? Like, "Hey God, remember me? I'm being good (ish). Please let me into Heaven!"

Is it just me, or is that a lot of pressure for a five-year-old? A five-year-old who maybe fibbed about eating all their broccoli. Just saying.

And the "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" prayer printable? Don't even get me started. Framed and hanging above the crib. Just perfect.

A constant reminder of mortality and potential eternal damnation. Or maybe I'm overthinking it. Nah.

Imagine a cute, pastel-colored printable with adorable little lambs. And then, BAM! "If I should die…" Seriously?

Alternative Bedtime Prayers, Please!

Look, I'm not saying ditch prayer altogether. Bedtime rituals are nice. Especially for little ones.

But can we maybe choose something a little less…dire? Perhaps something about fluffy clouds and happy dreams?

Or even just counting sheep? Anything's better than dwelling on the Grim Reaper before drifting off to dreamland.

Maybe something like, "Thank you for today. Please keep me safe tonight. May my dreams be filled with puppies." See? Much better!

Unpopular Opinion: It's a Little Morbid, Folks.

I know, I know. It's a classic. Generations have recited it. But still…that death part!

It's like starting a movie with the ending. Or serving dessert before dinner. It just feels out of order.

And let's be honest, kids don't fully grasp the concept of mortality anyway. So why introduce it in their nightly prayer?

Finding Peace (Without the Premature Funeral Planning)

Maybe my issue is less with the prayer itself. And more with its place in childhood.

Kids should feel safe and secure at bedtime. Not contemplating their own demise.

So, my unpopular opinion? Let's retire the "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" prayer printable. And replace it with something a little lighter. A little more…joyful.

Let kids drift off to sleep dreaming of unicorns and rainbows. Not their own funerals. Amen. (Or whatever feels less morbid).

Instead, why not encourage them to think of three things they are grateful for? It's a much better way to end the day, in my humble opinion.

And maybe, just maybe, they'll actually sleep soundly. Without the lingering fear of…you know.
