Naruto Fanfiction Betrayed By Hinata

Naruto Fanfiction Betrayed By Hinata

Okay, picture this: me, age 14, furiously typing away on my family's ancient desktop computer. The only light in the room is the screen's glow, illuminating my face as I painstakingly craft the perfect Naruto fanfic. It was going to be EPIC. Naruto, finally realizing Hinata was the one. The angst! The romance! The power of love! (Yeah, I was a bit dramatic.) I even included a scene where she single-handedly defeated Pain. Original, right?

Fast forward to today, and I shudder just thinking about that masterpiece of cringe. But it got me thinking... about how much our perceptions of characters, especially Hinata, have changed over the years. And more specifically, about how many older Naruto fanfics now feel... well, a little betrayed by canon.

The Hinata We Thought We Knew

Back in the day, Hinata was often portrayed in fanfiction as this incredibly shy, almost fragile, girl. She was defined by her crush on Naruto and her lack of confidence. Many stories focused on her overcoming these hurdles, usually through Naruto's encouragement. Think: damsel in distress waiting to be rescued by her knight in orange jumpsuits.

And let’s be honest, a lot of us ate that up. We wanted to see her shine, and Naruto was the catalyst. It was a simple, straightforward narrative. But was it really her narrative?

Now, don't get me wrong, I understand why she was written that way. Early Hinata was shy and lacked confidence. But as the series progressed, she grew and evolved. And that’s where the "betrayal" comes in. (Okay, maybe "betrayal" is a strong word. More like… a disconnection.)

Canon Hinata vs. Fanon Hinata

Think about the Hinata who fought alongside Naruto against Pain. Remember her passionate speech, her unwavering resolve? That wasn't the timid girl from the Chunin Exams. That was a woman who had found her strength, her purpose. And it wasn't just because of Naruto. It was because of her own dedication to her clan, her unwavering belief in herself, and the inspiration she drew from him (yes, him, but not only him).

Suddenly, those fanfics where Hinata was constantly tripping over herself and needing Naruto to hold her hand every five seconds felt… a little off. Like they were missing the point.

Anyone else feel this way? It's like those older stories, while well-intentioned, inadvertently minimized her agency and reduced her character to just being Naruto's love interest.

Side note: I'm not saying those fanfics are bad. They were a product of their time, and many of them are still enjoyable for what they are. Nostalgia is a powerful thing! But it's interesting to look back and see how our understanding of these characters has shifted.

The Power of Character Development

The "betrayal" (still using air quotes here) isn’t really a betrayal at all. It's a testament to Kishimoto's character development, even if some of it felt rushed or uneven. Hinata did grow. She did become stronger, both physically and mentally. She did find her own voice.

And that's something to celebrate! It means we, as fans, can also evolve our perspectives. We can look beyond the initial impressions and appreciate the complexity of these characters.

So, the next time you stumble across an old Naruto fanfic, remember to take it with a grain of salt. Appreciate it for what it is, but also recognize how far Hinata, and our understanding of her, has come. Maybe even be inspired to write a new story, one that truly captures the strength, resilience, and quiet determination of the Hyuga princess we know and love today.
