And then there's the "chosen one" trope. Sigh. Every other teenage protagonist is suddenly the key to everything. They’re destined to save the universe, all before they even get their driver's license.

Dystopian Drama

Let's not even get started on dystopian societies. Apparently, the future is bleak, and only a plucky teenager can overthrow the oppressive regime. Again.

I get it, it's allegorical. It's supposed to teach us about current social issues. But after reading about the tenth different version of a totalitarian government, I just want to yell, "Can't we just try not destroying the planet in the first place?!"

Seriously, where are the books about teenagers organizing effective recycling programs? Or inventing sustainable energy? I'd read that dystopian novel.

The Allure of the Alpha Male (and Female)

Another thing: the characters themselves. So many angsty loners! And these powerful figures that are impossibly attractive.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good morally grey character. But sometimes, it feels like everyone is trying way too hard to be edgy. Lighten up a little, people! Maybe crack a smile once in a while.

And what's with the obsession with alpha characters? Everyone's so busy vying for dominance that they forget to, you know, be decent human beings (or supernatural beings, whatever).

Where's the Fun?

Here's my unpopular opinion: libros para adolescentes de ficcion should be fun. They should be engaging. They should spark imagination. Is that too much to ask?

I'm not saying they can't be serious. I'm not saying they can't tackle difficult topics. But where's the joy? Where's the whimsy? Where's the sheer, unadulterated escapism?

Give me a quirky sidekick. Give me a ridiculous quest. Give me a talking animal with a sarcastic attitude. Just…give me something that makes me laugh! I want to laugh at libros para adolescentes de ficcion!

Not All Doom and Gloom

Okay, okay, I'm being harsh. I know there are tons of amazing YA books out there. Books that are creative, thought-provoking, and genuinely well-written.

And I'm not saying that teenagers shouldn't read about serious topics. Absolutely not! But let's balance the heavy stuff with a little bit of levity, shall we? Lets give them something light.

So, my call to action for all you aspiring YA authors out there: Dare to be different! Don't just regurgitate the same old tropes.

Write characters that are relatable, even if they're flawed. Craft stories that are engaging, even if they're not world-shattering. Surprise us! Delight us! Make us think!

And please, for the love of all that is holy, can we retire the love triangle? I'm begging you. Let us be free!
