Kamisama Kiss Ova Funimation

Kamisama Kiss Ova Funimation

Okay, let's talk Kamisama Kiss. Specifically, the OVAs Funimation gave us. Now, I love Tomoe. We all love Tomoe, right? That silver-haired fox dude? Chef's kiss! But... am I the only one who feels a teeny bit lukewarm about the OVAs?

OVA 1: The Marriage Story

This one's all about Nanami's school festival play. Sounds fun, right? It is cute. Seeing everyone dressed up is a treat. But honestly? It feels a little...filler-ish. Like a really well-animated, gorgeously drawn piece of fan service. And I'm usually all about the fan service. But somehow, this one didn't quite hit the spot.

Don't get me wrong. Nanami is adorable as always. And Tomoe, even reluctantly participating, is still ridiculously handsome. Still, the plot feels a bit thin. It's more of a "day in the life" than a compelling story arc. Maybe I'm just expecting too much after the brilliance of the main series.

Plus, let's be real. We're all watching for the romance. And while there are cute moments, they're sprinkled rather sparingly. I wanted more spark, Funimation! More longing glances! More almost-kisses interrupted by ridiculous situations! Is that too much to ask?

OVA 2: Tomoe Goes Wild!

This one is actually pretty good. Seeing Tomoe as a kid is hilarious. And the storyline is actually interesting with Yukiji.

Maybe my issue isn't with the animation or the voice acting. Those are both superb, as always. It's more...the pacing. Things feel rushed. Important plot points are glossed over. I understand they're trying to cram a lot into a short timeframe, but still. It's a little frustrating.

My (Maybe) Unpopular Opinion

So, here it is: the Kamisama Kiss OVAs from Funimation are...slightly underwhelming. Compared to the main series, they feel like pleasant side dishes rather than a satisfying main course.

Look, I still watched them multiple times. I still squealed at the cute moments. And I'd never discourage anyone from checking them out. But let's be honest. They don't quite capture the magic of the original anime.

Maybe it's because the main story was so complete. Maybe it's because my expectations were impossibly high. Or maybe, just maybe, Funimation could have given us a little more Tomoe and Nanami romance.

Anyone else feel this way? Or am I destined to be forever alone in my slightly lukewarm assessment of these OVAs?

Regardless, I'll still be rewatching Kamisama Kiss for the tenth time. Because who can resist Tomoe's snarky charm? Not this girl, that's for sure!

Ultimately, I'm just grateful for any excuse to revisit the world of Mikage Shrine. Even if those extra episodes are a little...fluffier than I'd hoped.

So, go ahead. Watch the OVAs. Judge for yourself. But don't say I didn't warn you. You might find yourself wanting just...a little bit more.
