India Vs Sri Lanka Test 1997

India Vs Sri Lanka Test 1997

Hey, remember that India vs. Sri Lanka Test series back in '97? Man, those were the days! Specifically, let’s rewind to that first Test in Colombo. Picture this: a young me, glued to the TV...probably eating something ridiculously unhealthy. You know the vibe.

Right off the bat, Sri Lanka won the toss. Did they blink? Nope! They chose to bat. Smart move, huh? Considering the batting lineup they had? We're talking some serious firepower.

And boy, did they bat! Sanath Jayasuriya... that guy was a menace! He just smashed everything. It’s like, did he even see the ball, or just swing and hope for the best? Whatever he did, it worked! A massive 340. 340! Can you even imagine scoring that much in a Test innings these days? It’s practically unheard of!

Then, Roshan Mahanama chipped in with 225. Two double centuries in one innings? Come on! It was almost unfair. The Indian bowlers must have been absolutely knackered. Remember Srinath? And Kumble? Absolute legends. They toiled and toiled… but sometimes, you just gotta tip your hat to the opposition, right?

Sri Lanka ended up declaring at a mammoth 952/6. NINE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-TWO! Seriously, that's not a cricket score, that’s a phone number! I think even my grandma could have scored a few runs against a bowling attack after they'd been in the field that long. Maybe. Okay, probably not. But still!

So, India comes into bat, right? Talk about pressure! Imagine having to face that kind of score. It's enough to make anyone's knees wobble. But hey, they tried their best, didn't they?

Sachin Tendulkar, of course, was the shining star. Always is, isn't he? He scored 143. A brilliant knock, no doubt, but even the Little Master couldn't quite pull off a miracle against that Lankan score. You know, sometimes I wonder, did Sachin ever have a bad day? Probably not!

Azharuddin also played a decent innings (68), but India were eventually all out for 537. A good score in any normal situation, but this wasn't exactly a "normal" situation, was it? 415 runs behind... ouch.

Sri Lanka, not needing to bat again (obviously!), enforced the follow-on. Did anyone expect them to bat again? I mean, seriously!

Second innings, India fared a little worse, getting all out for 307. Sachin top-scored again, this time with 74. Always consistent, our Sachin! But the writing was on the wall, wasn’t it? India lost by an innings and 36 runs.

Okay, so, India lost. Was it a disaster? Maybe. A bit embarrassing? Perhaps. But did we stop supporting them? Absolutely not! We're cricket fans, remember? We're used to the highs and lows. And besides, that Sri Lankan team was on fire back then. Let's give them credit where it's due.

That match... it was one for the record books, wasn't it? Still talk about it even now. A bit like that crazy catch you saw at the local cricket match last week, only, y'know, on a slightly bigger scale. 😉

And hey, even in defeat, there were some positives. Sachin's batting, for instance! Plus, it's always a learning experience, right? Always something to take away. Maybe they learned to bowl a little straighter? Maybe not! We'll never know.

Anyway, what a game! What a series! Just thinking about it makes me want to grab a cup of chai and watch some highlights. Fancy joining me?
