How To Reset Minecraft Launcher

Okay, let's be honest. We've all been there. Minecraft isn't acting right. Is it the game? Is it your computer? Who knows! But sometimes, just sometimes, the Minecraft Launcher is the culprit. And when it is, you just want to scream, right? And maybe throw your mouse at the wall. (Don't actually do that.)
So, what do you do? You try to reset it. That's what you do!
The "Close Everything" Method (aka The Hope and Pray)
First things first: exit. Exit EVERYTHING Minecraft-related. Launcher? Gone. Game itself? Poof. Maybe even close your browser. (Okay, maybe not. I need you here to read this, obviously.)
Must Read
Seriously, though, close it all. Right-click the little Minecraft icon in your system tray (that's down by the clock, for those playing at home). Make sure it's really gone. Sometimes those little guys are sneaky.
Then, restart the Launcher. Cross your fingers. Maybe do a little dance. Does it work? No? Okay, plan B.
The "App Data Dive" (aka The Slightly More Technical)
Time to get our hands a little dirty. This involves finding those hidden folders. Windows users, this is for you (mostly).

Press the Windows key + R. A little box pops up. Type %appdata% in that box. Hit enter.
Behold! The Roaming folder! Now, find the .minecraft folder. This is where all the magic (and sometimes the madness) happens.
Within the .minecraft folder, look for a folder called launcher_profiles.json. This file holds all the profile info for your Launcher. The settings you want to get rid of?
CAUTION: Deleting this file will wipe out your profiles and settings in the Launcher. Make sure you know your login details!

Either delete it, or move it somewhere safe. (My unpopular opinion: Just delete it. It’s faster.)
Restart the Minecraft Launcher. Ta-da! It should be like new. You'll need to log in again, of course. But hey, fresh start!
The "Uninstall/Reinstall Tango" (aka The Dramatic Approach)
Okay, nothing else worked? Fine. We're going nuclear. Time to uninstall and reinstall the whole darn thing.

Go to your system's "Add or Remove Programs" (or "Apps & Features," depending on your Windows version). Find the Minecraft Launcher. Click "Uninstall." Follow the prompts. Be thorough!
Once it's gone, head back to the Minecraft website. Download the Launcher again. Install it. Run it. Log in.
This usually fixes things. If it doesn't… well, let's not talk about that.
The "Is It Even The Launcher?" Reflection (aka The Unpopular Opinion Corner)
Now for my unpopular opinion: Sometimes, it's not the Launcher. Sometimes, it's something else entirely.

Have you updated your graphics drivers lately? Is your computer overheating? Are you running a million mods at once?
Just a thought: Maybe, just maybe, the Launcher is innocent.
But hey, you tried resetting it. You did your best. Now you can at least tell yourself you exhausted all options before descending into the depths of Google searches and forum threads.
Good luck, Minecrafter. May your blocks be ever glitch-free!
