How To Read Literature Like A Professor Spark Notes

How To Read Literature Like A Professor Spark Notes

Okay, let's talk about reading literature. You know, like they teach in college.

Specifically, reading it "like a professor." Sounds intimidating, right?

Well, I'm here to tell you a secret. It's not that hard. And maybe, just maybe, a little overrated.

The Infamous SparkNotes Method

Let's start with SparkNotes. We've all been there. Desperate, late at night, staring down a looming deadline.

SparkNotes promises salvation. A summary, character analysis, maybe even a quiz! Sweet relief!

But here's my unpopular opinion: SparkNotes isn't the devil some English teachers make it out to be.

But Wait, There's More! (Than Just Plot)

Professors (and How to Read Literature Like a Professor, by Thomas C. Foster) want you to dig deeper.

They want you to see the symbolism! The archetypes! The hidden meanings!

Like, a character wearing blue? Obviously, that represents sadness, the ocean, the Virgin Mary, and maybe a Smurf.

It can feel like you're searching for something that isn't there. Is it really there or are you just told to see it? 🤔

Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar! (Freud might disagree, though). 😂

The Professor's Toolkit (and My Personal Grievances)

So, what's in this professor's toolkit? Allusions! Intertextuality! Mythological parallels!

Basically, recognizing when a book is referencing another book, a myth, or anything else ever written.

It's like a giant literary inside joke. And if you don't get it, you feel left out.

Here's where I start to grumble. Am I supposed to have read everything before I can understand anything?

It feels like you need a PhD in everything to read a simple novel! Is this fun for anyone?

Rain Means... What Exactly?

Okay, fine, symbolism is important. Foster's book harps on it.

Rain often represents cleansing or renewal. Or sadness. Or despair. Or maybe it's just raining!

See my problem? It could mean anything! Literature can be very versatile.

And let's not even get started on the "every trip is a quest" trope. Seriously, Professor?

Sometimes, people just need to go to the grocery store. Maybe for some inspiration. 🥬

So, How Should We Read?

Here's my humble suggestion. Read for enjoyment first!

Let the story wash over you. Get to know the characters.

If you notice some interesting patterns or symbols, great! If not, that's okay too!

Don't feel pressured to find deep meaning in every single sentence. This can get tiresome, no?

The Unpopular Conclusion

Maybe, just maybe, overanalyzing literature sucks the joy out of it.

Maybe reading "like a professor" isn't always the best approach.

Maybe sometimes, it's okay to just enjoy a good story.

And yes, it's okay to use SparkNotes when you're in a bind. I won't tell. 😉

So go forth! Read! Enjoy! And don't let anyone tell you you're doing it wrong.

Unless you're writing a thesis. Then maybe listen to your professor. Just a little.

Happy reading, everyone! I hope you enjoyed my opinion! 😊
