How To Make Car Freshies With Mica Powder

Okay, let's talk car freshies. Those cute little air fresheners hanging in your ride? We're making them. And we're making them sparkly. Because, frankly, everything is better with glitter. (Unpopular opinion: Adults are allowed to love glitter. Fight me.)
Gather Your Gear
First, you'll need some stuff. Don't panic, it's not rocket science. Or, maybe it is rocket science disguised as crafting. I'm not sure anymore. I've seen too much glitter.
You'll definitely need plaster of paris. It's like, magic dust that turns into solid stuff. Pretty cool, right? Also, you need water. Obvious, but still worth mentioning. Someone somewhere will forget the water. I guarantee it.
Must Read
Next up: molds! Get creative! Stars, hearts, dinosaurs... whatever floats your boat. Or, in this case, hangs from your rearview mirror. Silicone molds work best, trust me. Less struggle = more happy.
And now, the star of the show: Mica powder! Get a rainbow of colors. Because why have one when you can have them all? Think shimmering blues, radiant reds, glittering golds... the possibilities are endless. It's like a tiny disco party in your car. What’s not to love?
Oh, and fragrance oil! Pick your faves. Vanilla? Lavender? That weird "new car smell" that probably doesn't smell anything like a new car? Go wild.

Don't forget mixing bowls, spoons, parchment paper, and something to poke a hole in your freshie before it hardens. A straw works. A toothpick works. Your pinky finger probably doesn't work. Just sayin'.
Mix It Up!
Time to get messy! (My favorite part). Mix your plaster of paris and water according to the instructions on the package. Usually, it’s a one-to-one ratio, but double-check. Nobody wants a crumbly freshie. Unless you want a crumbly freshie. Then, by all means, live your best crumbly freshie life.
Now, the fun part: Add your mica powder! Be generous. More mica = more sparkle. I usually add a tablespoon per cup of plaster mix, but experiment! Find your sparkle sweet spot.

Stir it all together until it's a beautiful, shimmering concoction. It should look like unicorn tears. Or mermaid scales. Or, you know, really sparkly plaster. Whatever.
Scent-sational!
Time for the smelly goodness. Add your fragrance oil. Start with a few drops and sniff. Keep adding until it smells as strong as you like. Just don't overdo it. You don't want your car smelling like a perfume factory exploded. Unless, again, that's your thing. No judgment here.
Mold It!
Pour your sparkly, smelly mix into your molds. Try not to spill it. (I usually spill it. It's part of the process). Tap the molds gently to release any air bubbles. Bubbles are the enemy of smooth freshies.

Poke a hole in the top of each freshie with your straw or toothpick. This is where you'll hang it later. Don't forget this step! Otherwise, you'll have a beautiful, sparkly, smelly paperweight.
Wait For It...
Now comes the hard part: waiting. Let your freshies dry completely. This usually takes a few hours, or even overnight. The package will tell you the exact dry time. Be patient! (I'm terrible at being patient). Don't touch them! Don't poke them! Just…wait.
Pop 'Em Out!
Once your freshies are dry, gently pop them out of the molds. Ta-da! Sparkly, scented goodness. If they're a little rough around the edges, you can sand them down gently with some fine-grit sandpaper.

Thread some string, ribbon, or twine through the hole you made earlier. Tie a knot. Hang your freshie in your car. Admire your handiwork. Feel the sparkly, scented joy.
Pro Tip
Sometimes, the fragrance fades quickly. To refresh your freshie, simply add a few more drops of fragrance oil to the back. Easy peasy. (And yes, you can add more glitter. I highly encourage it).
Remember: This is supposed to be fun! Don't stress if they're not perfect. Imperfect freshies are still sparkly and smelly. And that's all that matters, right?
So go forth and create! Fill your car with sparkle and scent. And remember, don't let anyone tell you that you're too old for glitter. They're just jealous.
