Die Hard Christmas Movie Meme

Okay, let's talk Die Hard. Christmas. Controversy. You know the drill.
Every December, the internet explodes. The question is asked: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? The debates rage. Friendships are tested. Families are torn apart.
Seriously though, it's become the Yuletide equivalent of asking "Is water wet?"

The Argument: A Brief Overview
Basically, the "it is a Christmas movie" camp points out: It's set on Christmas Eve! There's a Christmas party! There's Christmas music! Heck, even a Christmas tree shows up (briefly, before Hans Gruber ruins everything).
Then there's the "it's not a Christmas movie" crowd. They argue it's an action movie first and foremost. The Christmas setting is just window dressing. It could have been set on any other holiday and the plot would still work. (Probably. Maybe.)
My (Slightly) Heretical Opinion
Here's where I might lose some of you. Buckle up.

I... I don't really care that much.
I know, I know! Blasphemy! How can I be so flippant about such a serious cinematic debate?
Hear me out. I enjoy Die Hard. I enjoy watching it. And if someone puts it on at Christmas? Cool! If someone puts it on in July? Also cool!

The movie itself is amazing. Bruce Willis as John McClane? Genius. Alan Rickman as the deliciously evil Hans Gruber? Iconic. The explosions? The one-liners? All fantastic.
But...labeling it a Christmas movie? It feels…almost…forced. Like we're trying too hard to shoehorn a non-traditional choice into a very traditional category.
Consider This...
Think of other movies set during Christmas. It's a Wonderful Life. Miracle on 34th Street. Elf. These films are fundamentally about Christmas. The themes are about family, goodwill, and the spirit of the season.
Now think of Die Hard. It's about a cop trying to save his wife from terrorists. The themes are bravery, resourcefulness, and…well, blowing stuff up.

Yes, there's a Christmas party. Yes, there's a tree. But those are just set pieces. They don't drive the plot. They don't impact the characters' motivations in any meaningful way beyond providing a convenient excuse for everyone to be in one place.
So, What Is It Then?
To me, Die Hard is a fantastic action movie that happens to be set at Christmas. It's like saying a sandwich is a birthday present because you ate it on your birthday. It’s adjacent to the celebration, but not the celebration itself.
The Bottom Line (For Me)
Look, I'm not trying to ruin anyone's Christmas cheer. If watching Die Hard every year makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, then by all means, keep doing it! Embrace it! Yippee-ki-yay your way through the holidays!

But can we all agree that maybe, just maybe, we can watch Die Hard any time of year without feeling the need to justify its existence as a Christmas movie?
Let's just call it a classic action movie. And leave it at that. Maybe watch it with some eggnog...or a beer. Whatever floats your boat.
And maybe, just maybe, we can find something else to argue about next December. (The Star Wars Holiday Special, anyone?)
After all, as John McClane himself might say, “Welcome to the party, pal!”
