2023 P Jovita Idar American Woman Quarter
Okay, folks, let's talk about something shiny. Something that might be jingling in your pocket right now. I'm talking about the 2023 quarter featuring Jovita Idar. Yes, the amazing journalist, activist, teacher, and suffragist. Now, I know everyone's singing its praises, and rightfully so! But...I have a confession. Maybe, just maybe, I have a slight, teeny-tiny...unpopular opinion.
Don't get me wrong! I think it's fantastic that the U.S. Mint is highlighting amazing women. The American Women Quarters Program is seriously cool. Showcasing folks like Jovita Idar is important. It's about time our coins showed more than just dead presidents, right?
But...and this is a big but... does anyone else think the quarter itself...feels a little...underwhelming? I mean, Jovita Idar was a powerhouse. She took on injustice with the fierceness of a honey badger defending its honey. She deserves a coin that practically screams, "Look at me! I fought for justice!"
Must Read
Instead, we get...a profile. A respectable profile, mind you. But still. It's like ordering a triple espresso and getting decaf. You appreciate the thought, but the punch is missing.
It's Not About Disrespect, Okay?
Before you come at me with pitchforks and torches (digital ones, of course), let me be clear. I'm not knocking Jovita Idar's accomplishments. Her work is awe-inspiring. Seriously, go read about her. You'll be blown away. But shouldn't the coin visually reflect that fiery spirit? Couldn't they have shown her, I don't know, holding a newspaper with a headline about fighting for Mexican Americans' rights? Or maybe leading a protest? Something that really captured the essence of her activism?

I saw one concept drawing somewhere online that was amazing. It depicted her writing, with a newspaper in the background. It was dynamic, powerful, and instantly told a story. That's what I wanted to see on my quarter!
Maybe I'm asking too much. Maybe designing a coin is harder than it looks. (Probably is, actually.) But still, a little more oomph wouldn't have hurt. It's like they played it safe. Too safe.
And listen, the other quarters in the series are great! Maya Angelou? BOOM! Sally Ride? Inspiring! But for some reason, the Jovita Idar quarter just doesn’t quite hit the same high note. It feels...subdued.

It's a Small Detail, But Details Matter
I know, I know. It's just a quarter. A tiny piece of metal. But coins are symbols. They represent our values, our history. And if we're going to honor amazing women like Jovita Idar, we should do it with a coin that truly captures their impact. A coin that makes people stop and say, "Wow, who was that?" Not just, "Oh, another new quarter."
Think about it: When you look at a Kennedy half-dollar, you get a sense of his charisma. Or when you see a Standing Liberty quarter, you understand that it represents liberty and freedom. I wanted that same feeling from the Jovita Idar quarter. I wanted to hold it and feel inspired, challenged, and ready to fight for what's right.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm being overly critical. But hey, that's what unpopular opinions are for, right? To spark conversation, to make us think. And maybe, just maybe, to get a little chuckle out of the whole thing.
So, next time you see a Jovita Idar quarter, take a close look. Admire the detail. Appreciate the recognition of an important figure in American history. And then, if you feel like it, whisper a little suggestion to the U.S. Mint for next year's design. Because who knows? Maybe they'll listen. And maybe, just maybe, we'll get a coin that truly does justice to the legacy of Jovita Idar.
And seriously, go read about her! She's awesome.
